Classical / Cell Animation || Stop Motion Animation || Computer Animation || Getting The Right Training || Going Abroad

Computer Generated Imaging (CGI) has been used in many movies, it drastically cut down the costs of building impressive scenes and filming them. The line between 2D computer animation and classical is slowly blurring. Computers are now used to boost cell animation by doing tedious tasks like in-betweening, colouring and so on..

The Basic Work
Two-dimensional COMPUTER animation that is created from scratch (on the computer) is chiefly used for websites and multimedia presentations. 2-D Computer animation is more web based (like the pop up ads animation/ gifs you see online). 3-D or CGI (computer graphic imaging) on the other hand is what is used in movies (Shrek, Toy Story, Antz...the list is endless!)

Do You Need an Art Background?
Computers don't get rid of the need for skills in life drawing, character design so in any case you have to have your fundas straight. Over and above that 3-D animators have to deal with texturing, and lighting in a 3-D environment.

Software
You can learn 2D software like Flash or Image Ready or any other software and claim you are an animator, but the fact remains not everyone is artistic. You do need some basic design sense to make a mark in this line. Even if the character is developed by an artist and you are required to animate it, you still need some knowledge of how a body looks like, when in motion.3-D is more complicated. The character can be created from scratch on the computer or a model is made which is then grabbed by a camera and transferred onscreen. There are a number of software available but first you have to know the basics of Adobe Photoshop/ Adobe Illustrator before moving on to higher end packages.

2D Animation
Flash, Image Ready, ToonBoom Studio, GIF Animator, Director and Animo (Last seen in the Prince of Egypt, Animo it is a specialised tool for cell animation used in cartoons).

3D Animation
Maya, Motion Capture, 3D Studio Max, Tictactoon, Adobe Premier, Adobe After Effects, Xara, Swift 3D, Vector 3D, Bryce 3D, Combustion and so on.

Animation aside software development is very important in this field. Big feature animation studios, like Pixar, use their own proprietary software that isn't available off the shelf. The best computer skills won't make up for lousy drawing skills, also software trends keep changing. You need to keep yourself updated on the latest at the same time you must have your fundamentals in animation straight!
