Sarkar sets the record straight - when it comes to gangster movies, nobody does it better than Ram Gopal Verma. Ramu's tribute to The Godfather, is impressive to say the least.
Subhash 'Sarkar' Nagre(Amitabh Bachchan), a messiah to the common junta is an institution in himself and runs a parallel system of power, 'solving' people's problems. He has 2 sons, US returned Shankar(Abhishek Bachchan) and the black sheep Vishnu(Kay Kay). However, his ways are disliked by the mighty in political circles. But trouble starts when Sarkar takes panga with the underworld. He is falsely implicated for murder, and when responsibilities falls on his shoulder Shankar rises up to the occassion to take Sarkar's place. The movie has many blood-pressure-raising moments eg. the first-time meeting between Rashid and Sarkar.
After Black, Amitabh once again comes up with a mindblowing performance and reiterates his position as the finest Bollywood actor. His mere stare is enough to terrorize the audience. Abhishek, with his brooding intense eyes, is a treat to watch and the father-son scenes are total paisa vasool. My only crib is that footage shouldn't have been wasted on Tanishaa and Katrina Kaif.
Technically the movie is slick and has a sepia look. Ramu's power over the cinematic medium is amazing and he knows how to extract the best from his actors. After Satya and Company, Sarkar is a worthy film to complete Ramu's underworld trilogy.
