Prakash Jha has done it again. After deftly handling the Bhagalpur blinding incident in Gangaajal, this time he takes a look at Bihar's kidnapping industry - and comes out a winner.
Ajay (Ajay Devgan) is a civil services aspirant with an idealistic father. After thrice failing to clear his IAS exams, he is labelled as a failure - inspite of bribing the authorities. A freak incident later, he comes in contact with local goon-cum-MLA Tabrez Alam (Nana Patekar). And his journey towards the top of the crime syndicate begins. The film touches many aspects from caste-politics and horse trading to kidnapping as a lucrative and a flourishing business for the unemployed youth.
Ajay Devgan is simply superb during his brilliant transformation from a frustrated and hapless youth to a kidnapping lord. Also watchout for his breakdown scene after his fight with his father. Nana Patekar whose character is heavily based on the the real-life MP Shahbuddin, does a competent job. A special mention goes to the spine-chilling and tension-filled scene where he mandhandles a police officer.
One minor flaw is that the film drags a bit towards the end. But overall, I wouldn't mind watching it again.
