Rajkumari Santoshi is back! The maker of Andaaz Apna Apna returns with the very colourful and bright Ajab Prem…After a huge round of promotions, it was perhaps the most awaited film after the Diwali fiasco.
The film is basically about Prem (Ranbir Kapoor), the president of the Happy Club, who helps lovers unite, makes people laugh, and basically likes to keep them happy. There is one small problem though. He is completely jobless. Enter Jenny, which gives a new direction to his life and some rollicking moments in the film. Of course, that isn’t the whole of the film. There is the disappointed father (Darshan Jariwala), the happy club members, Jenny’s parents, the unlucky villain and many others. But one shouldn’t go looking for a script and its ingenuities in this film.
Right from the beginning, the film promises nothing but a warm, romantic and clichéd setting filled with insane moments of laughter. There are caricatures, references to older cinema, and of course, Santoshi’s own Andaaz Apna Apna. And as in the previous one, this one too has a catch – line, the one dialogue that repeats throughout the film and yet seems relevant.
Katrina looks absolutely gorgeous. Acting you ask? Don’t bother. She isn’t there for her acting skills, but just the beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. Vijoo Khote returns with his Robert act, but could’ve had much more to do. Zakir Hussain does well as Sajid don. There is Upen Patel, who provides comic relief through his horrendous acting....
But the film belongs to Ranbir, who is surely the next star. His comic timing, though jarred in some places, is definitely multiplied when combined with his charm and screen presence. He is completely natural as the happy – go – lucky Prem.
The music is okay, with only a couple of songs worth remembering. It’s really good to have a comedy film without all of the double entendres or sexual innuendos which currently populate the comic genre. The film is set in a completely warm and simple world. The last half an hour does drag on, but the rescue scene makes it worthwhile. Watch this one for the sheer entertainment value. As most directors would like to say, it’s a “good, clean family movie”.
