I'll be honest. I came across this album purely by accident, when my secret metal music source told me that Tyranny of Minority was a Progressive Death Metal album. Without bothering to Google a review, I went straight ahead and got my hands on it. The intro track "Archangel" was a beautifully crafted melodic guitar piece that had me hooked straightaway. The next track, "Generation Kill" started with a nice, zippy riff, and I waited for the inevitable Death Growl that I've grown to love so much; but it never came.
Instead, the vocals sounded as though they'd just been taken off a track from a Dream Theatre album, and hell, I loved it!
The lyrical content is, like most classic bands, metaphorical at the best of times, dealing with current issues, social decay, violence, "Plastic Gods", the destruction of mankind, the works.
My personal favourite song is "Lost Cause" which essentially deals with a matter of lost trust, and the riff is just infectious.
The vocals in this album, provided by Edward Box are strong, yet soothing at the same time; he has a great range of vocals, from the low pitch, almost Industrial drawl in "I, Executioner", to the higher notes in "Plastic God" and "Lost Cause".
Almost every song has one solo at the very least, performed by Pete Thompson; some reminiscent in style to Janick Gers of Iron Maiden, while others have the more contemporary, psychedelic sound of Ritchie Blackmore.
Granted, they have various classic and current influences, but 'Tyranny of Minority'...
is a metal masterpiece, the likes of which are becoming rather hard to find, in the midst of the commercial, manufactured rock/metal pretenders of today. It's not OTT, it's not mellow, it's Vendetta. Do yourself a favour: get your hands on it ASAP. There are a few things in life that you just can't regret doing. This is one.
