HAKIM AALIM'S HAIR AND TATTOO LOUNGE Mado Wot
HAKIM AALIM'S HAIR AND TATTOO LOUNGE So do you like all the looks that Sanju baba sports in his movies? Or did you like langda tyagi's half bald cut in Omkara? So who's the man behind all these hairstyles? Its renowned celeb stylist Aalim Hakim.

Located at the upmarket area of Carter Road, this place has a cozy waiting area with wooden couches and a big Buddha- headed waterfall. Then there is the reception, where the walls are adorned by Aalim's pics with his famous clients, mostly filmstars. And then you enter the main salon area.

The moment you walk into the salon, which is very aptly named as Hakim Aalim's Hair and Tattoo lounge, you feel that you've actually entered a proper lounge. There is an in-house DJ right in the center of the salon who plays from morning to evening. I even spotted Aalim breaking into lil jigs between his cuts!

Each styling table has a DVD player, so that you can enjoy your favourite movie while going through the painstaking process of rebonding, colouring etc. and of course you can request the DJ to play your favorite song, while chopping off your hair!

This place is like full of exuberance. You'll find all the stylists almost your age with funky hairstyles at all.
Now once inside the salon, it is not difficult to spot Aalim amongst the crowd of people. He sports red hair which is black only towards the nape of the neck. Besides that, he has pierced ears, nose, and eyebrows. Also sports a few tattoos towards his upper arm. (All this didn't surprise me though, as I've seen him on TV with weirder hairstyles!)
At the salon, he answers a few of my questions.

1) Which is the craziest hairstyle you've sported?
Oh there have been many. I do it all the time. I change my hairstyle every 2 or 3 months. Like once, I had green hair. I even had a double coloured snake on my head. (Snake made of his hair guys! Not asli! Duh!)

2) Which is craziest thing you've done for a client?
There have been lots. So many that I don't even remember. Clients surprisingly, ask for the weirdest of cuts.

3) Who are your famous clients?
Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Dhoni, Kajol, Ajay Devgan, Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi. Adnan Sami, Sunny Deol, Saif Ali Khan, Shoaib Akhtar and many more.

4) Who is your favourite client? And why?
Salman Khan. Great guy. He's a friend. I love him. Even Sanjay Dutt experiments a lot.

5) Do you style for movies?
Oh yes. I've done quite a few movies like Salaam Namaste, Musafir, Chocolate, Apna Sapna Money Money etc.

6) All your stylists have a distinct look. Do u insist on all your stylists having a hip and happening cut or look?
No, not at all. It's completely upto them. They should be able to carry off whatever they sport. No point in forcing them to look cool!

7) This place looks like all you guys are having a ball of a time yaar!
Absolutely! None of my stylists want to go back home from work. The ambience is such that they are tempted to stay back. Its work with pleasure for them. I myself come to the salon every single day. Can't live without this place man!

8) Do you follow trends? What is the current trend like?
I don't follow trends, I make them! Though I think oriental fashion is something new that people are trying out. Like those chini hairstyles, short from the top, long from behind, stuff like that.

9) Any tips for our readers?
People know it when you fake it! You may have the most amazing hairstyle, but if it doesn't suit your personality, it's of no use. Trust me! No use imitating your favourite stars too. While in a movie, they have a character to play with a setting that suits the character, they have a background score each time the hero comes on screen, it all adds to the appeal, so everything looks all glamourous and appealing, but when you walk on the road, there's no music man! (So true, all you hear is the annoying truck ka horn!). So the bottom line is, BE ORIGINAL.

10) And finally, what's your advice to the ones who want to make hairstyling their profession?
This is presently one of the best profession's to be in. you need to have a strong passion for it. Creativity is what will help you in the long run. It may look all glamourous, but there is also a lot of hardwork. I work for almost 12 hours a day and give around 14 cuts each day.

Ok , while I was here, I spotted actor Chunky Pandey getting rid of his oh-so-popular long hair! He now sports a short cropped look that has chopped off 10 years from his face, all thanks to Aalim!
On asking him as to why he comes to Aalim, he very fondly says "he's the best! This guy can read faces and tell exactly what will look good on you. I trust him completely. I've been coming to him for almost 2 years now. Especially with my hair, it's only him."

This place comes with a price. A very expensive one at that!
A haircut from the style director himself, that's Aalim, will cost 1600 bucks for guys and 2000 bucks for girls. Then there are different levels of stylists which will cost you comparatively less.
Get a permanent tattoo for 2500 bucks.
Piercing done for Rs.1275 (hah!).
Psst… (You may even spot your favourite star whilst you're there!)

Mado Wot

"Hello Mad o Wot..." the receptionist asks when I call for an appointment. Yes you definitely do need to be a
little bit mad if you're a regular at Sapna Bhavnani's hair salon a.k.a. 'Mad o Wot'. Step into the salon and you're hit by a of colours and wacky art. From a 60's disco ball to hindi movie-poster art, the place
screams trend-setters. Sapna herself verbalises this thought, when asked what trends she follows, she answers, "We make trends, not follow them. Sounds snobbish but its true. Trends are for amateurs. Hee Hee!"

So how did she get started?
"I started by cutting my own hair in America and before I knew it, people wanted my cut and requested me to cut their hair. So I did without any formal training."
No wonder this lady has developed her own style that's like no one and nothing else!

What was the pay like initially?
"When I officially started in India, my salary was Rs.4500, and my rent Rs.12,000. My reasons for quitting were obvious. Hee Hee. Don't know how much it is now but I know that my rents covered and so is my travelling.Yippee!"

How does Sapna Bhavnani take care of her hair?
"I don't. If the cut is good, the rest just falls into place. I just use a good shampoo and conditioner."

What colours are in?
"Like I said earlier, we don't follow trends. We pick colours based on client needs and personality."

Who does she usually experiment on besides dummies?
"I never experiment on dummies. My head has always been the first to try on."

Any parents-out-to-kill-you stories?
"Here is the low-down that will shock most. 40% of my clients are moms! That's right!Who want to be a bit glam, a bit different. And I've had lots of moms bring in their kids for makeovers. It's quite strange actually because I didn't think I would attract them.
And then i also have my regular bollywood clients.so you see i have a mix of all kinds of people. Life is good. The common thing amongst all: mad o wot."

Famous clients?
"Why is this question asked everytime? I feel like a show off! If I must answer, here it goes, Bipasha, John, Koena, Gauri Khan, Dino, Minisha Lamba, Hrithik, Priyanka, Yana, Dhoni, Sameera / Sushama / Meghna Reddy, etc."

Favourite client?
"I love anyone that is free of society restraints and experiments with their hair, and luckily for me, most of my clients are that."

Craziest hair-cut she has ever given someone:
"God! Cannot decide. Everyday i do atleast 3 crazy hair designs. I am lucky."

Sapna's latest hair-cut:
"By the time this is published I've already changed my hair twice. Yup im good like that."

She's also started training newbies in the art of wacky hair ishtyles:
"I guess its time to pass on the knowledge. Surprisingly I just found out that I love to teach.I would like to teach more often, yes."

Plans to open up more salons?
"I think one more. But that's it."

Who has...
the craziest hairstyle- "Me!",the best hairstyle- "Me again!"

If not a hair stylist, she would be..."A fashion guru."

Style tips:
"I hate giving style tips. They never work. The best thing one can do for themselves is start with a good hair cut. The rest falls in to place. Believe me."
