Suddenly there seems to be a lot of media attention- most bad, some good- about alternative sexuality. There are loud voices asking for homosexuality to be both condemned and accepted in society. JAM Magazine decided to find out what the youth thinks about this hitherto taboos topic.

Our survey was carried out anonymously so that people could be open and honest.
Total respondents were 244 of which 187 where male. The survey was conducted on jammag.com

Are you aware of anyone in your circle of friends who is gay?

There are a lot of gay people out there! We are pretty impressed! And junta seem to be ok keeping gay friends too. We like that!

What would be your reaction if you found out that a friend was gay?

So it's not like everyone who said they're with homosexuality really expect to see his or her friends gay. A tiny bit of good old Indian Hypocrisy, "as long as its not me", perhaps?

Have you ever been felt-up/harassed by a person of the same sex in a public place / public transport?

We were totally not shocked to here that a third of all guys had been felt-up or harassed by guys in public places and public transport. Women seem to have a much more peaceful time.

WHOW-WATCH THOSE HANDS!

a man once tried to touch my crotch in a crowded Borivali local

n i took it as a compliment.. i wasnt felt up.. but she tried flertin wid me..

i punched him right in the face. keep it to yourself bro

What's your take on homosexuality?

Most people (80%) think homosexuality is a personal thing. So people are not as bigoted as we might think. But while just 7% women thought homosexuality was disgusting, the same for men was much higher at 17%. Could this be because men are more afraid of being susceptible to advances by homosexuals? Later, in question five, we see that this could be true. Also women could be just plain more tolerant than men.

JANTA COMMENTS

Disgusted Male: Its abnormal, Adam was made for Eve and not for Steve.... and Eve was made for Adam, not for madam- from a guy

Personal thing: I don't think that 'Homosexuality' is natural. But, I respect their choice and don't look upon them. Finally, it's their own life. India certainly needs to get rid of it's draconian laws in this respect. But in a country where normal sex is such a taboo, this seems distant.

Disgusted Female: Though it's entirely a personal thing but still, I mean I find it disgusting coz its in a way against nature, laws made by GOD. The way other man made things which outrule the GOD's law r playing havoc this'll gonna end soon in a miserable way. So, till dat time let it prevail.

How would you react if you were felt up / harassed by a person of the same sex?

Half of our respondents just fled the scene when things got uncomfortable. About 16% were shocked and made a scene. We think more people should politely tell the other party to stay away. Suffering in silence is terrible. And punching people is a second line of defense at best.

Are you aware of any gay hang-outs?

Arrey kya baat hai! So many gay friends but don't know any gay hangouts? Bahut nainsaafi hai! Yup there are definitely some gay hangouts out there and of course gay parties at the usual 'straight' hangouts. Do some googling and Orkutting and it's all there…

SSHHH KOI GAY
A club called VooDoo i think at Colaba
a rave party is organized in a pune farm house monthly, but i wont disclose the place, there are many active groups and communities of gay ppl
of course! many public comfort places, transports, etc around the country!

Oh, except for dis gay-bar in "crumbs" on Star World... lol

We also asked people to leave us with some interesting thoughts or comments. Here are a choice few:

"It's a personal choice but India still needs to mature for this community. The gay community from inside and outside has its own sets of problems… its shocking that there are more than 15 million gays & lesbians in our country. Also its strange our ignorance about lesbians and a quiet acceptance of it in contrast to gay community."

"Most women I speak to admit to fantasizing about other women. I'm of the opinion that most women would be bisexual if they could free their minds…"

"When I first found out that a close friend was gay, I was disgusted and shocked and too stunned to react. I never thought he was gay because he would do the usual guy things- didn't look different or "gay" or anything of that sort. He had even said that he had a crush on a girl in my class etc. So, I guess he wanted to act like he was not one. Anyway, at the age of 21, it was a big shock for me. Later, I grew comfortable with it. We are not much in touch and neither does he know that I know about his homosexuality as i found it out through someone else (a reliable source though). I now feel that being gay is something that is a personal thing though it may have its roots in some childhood abuse incident etc."

"Homosexuality is not natural… it is perverse pleasure"
